  • Position Summary

    This 9-month position is ideal for those primarily interested in teaching as they will be responsible for teaching 24 credit hours in Biology, primarily face-to-face in Fayette, Iowa. The position supports Biology, Conservation Management, and Exercise Science majors and may also include teaching biology for non-majors. Title and compensation may be negotiable based on experience and credentials. The individual in this position reports to the Department Chair and Academic Dean.



    Essential Duties Summary

    Lecturers are primarily contracted to teach and actively maintain their professional development. It is possible for lecturer positions to be converted to tenure-track positions with temporal credit for tenure assuming a level of service and scholarship, in addition to teaching and professional development, during that time consistent with the expectations outlined below.



    Tenure is based on the following components:

    Teaching Effectiveness – Effectively teach a full-time load (24 credits per year) consisting of courses for Biology majors including Principles of Biology and other coursework that might include Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics, Evolution, Cell and Molecular Biology and upper level electives in the Biology major, depending upon the candidate’s expertise. The successful candidate may also teach introductory biology classes for non-science majors. Some courses include a laboratory component. The specific course load is subject to change, depending upon the qualifications and expertise of the successful candidate, and coordination with existing faculty areas of expertise. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise semester-long student capstone research projects in their area of expertise.



    Scholarship – UIU recognizes categories of scholarship as described by Boyer. These include the scholarship of discovery (traditionally thought of as “research”), integration (making connections across the disciplines), application (application of knowledge to consequential problems), or teaching (application of knowledge to student learning).



    Professional Development – UIU faculty members are expected to maintain a high level of professional competence and should keep current with requirements, knowledge, or trends, as well as contribute to improved student learning, program development, or curriculum revision.



    Service to the University and Community, which may require participation outside of the 9-month contract period. Service to the university may include departmental, programmatic, or general university service including, but not limited to:

    Collaboration with colleagues on departmental activities, including recruitment and advising of students, assessment of student learning outcomes, and curriculum revision and development.
    Participation in meetings and service on committees, completion of necessary training


    Community service may include geographic, professional, or other communities.



    Required Qualifications

    A lecturer position requires a minimum of a Master’s degree in Biology or a related field. A tenure-track position requires a Ph.D. in Biology or a doctorate in a professional degree program in the biomedical sciences (e.g. MD, DO, DVM, DDS, DDM or DPT). Must be eligible to work within the United States.
