  • Description:
  • FISH AND WILDLIFE have been used as resources by humans all over the world. However, in many areas populations have been overexploited or affected negatively by human land-use. As a result of misuse and lack of management, many fish and wildlife populations have become depleted or, in the worst cases, extinct. The situation is very complex as many stakeholders are involved: fishermen, hunters, owners of land and water rights, native peoples, forestry companies, hunting and fishing enterprises, NGOs and governmental agencies for fisheries and environmental protection. Although we manage fish and wildlife populations better than we did 50 years ago, there is still a shortage of people with the right skills. Students completing this Master’s programme will play an important role in solving these problems.

The programme will lead to a Master of Science degree in Biology. The first year consists of four coordinated courses: Fish and Wildlife Census Techniques, Applied Population Ecology, Human Dimensions of Fish and Wildlife, and Fish and Wildlife Management. In the second year the programme includes an individual Master’s thesis, and time is also set aside for optional courses.

The programme will prepare you for a career with national and international organisations, where good knowledge of fish and wildlife conservation and management is important. The programme can also be regarded as a first step in a research career. This course is offered by the department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies. The department has approximately 50 scientists and PhD students actively conducting research in the fields of fish and wildlife management, forest biodiversity conservation and aquaculture.

  • Admission Information:
  • The programme is aimed at students with a Bachelor’s or similar degree in biology or other relevant subjects. The entry requirement for the programme is a BSc in biology or forest science (180 HEC) including 90 HEC in forest science with a specialisation in biology, or 60 HEC in biology.
